Wæstm: Installment Number Two!

The journey continues...

Eala! I hope everyone has had a lovely holiday season and is ready to dive into the new year!

This week, I’ll be continuing with the next chapter of Wæstm, in which the apple continues his journey in an unexpected location.

A quick note: at the end of this chapter, you’ll see a transliterated onomatopoeia, written using both the letter æ, which has vanished from our modern English language, and the combination of sc to make the same sound that our combination of sh makes today. I originally had all of the words that I created when there was no known Old English equivalent written in the International Phonetic Alphabet, but eventually revised them to mainly follow standard Old English grammatical and spelling guidelines, which I find clearer and closer to the original material I attempted to emulate.

CHAPTER THE SECOND

A chilly arrival in paradise involving threatening large animals, soft grass, an uncompromised motive, and a (slight) cliffhanger ending.

The apple awakes in the snow

Se wæstm awæccð in þām snawe

He is in the blue mountains

Hē is in þām hǣwum beorgum

He rolls into soft grass

Hē gewælteð in ful-sefte heg

He still wishes to perform good deeds

Hē git wille fremman ellen

He sees large animals in the meadow

Hē seoð micelu nitenu in þǣre mæde

He rolls through the grass to the lake

Hē gewælteð þurh þǣre cwican to þǣre lace 

The lake is deep and cold

Seo lacu bið un-gryndu ond ceald
